The Internet of Things (IoT) is a fast-growing concept that involves the embedding of sensors into objects or “things” with the objective of bridging and exchanging data with other “things” over the internet. This concept is utilized in a variety of settings and used to create forms of technology such as wireless inventory trackers, wearable health monitors and even biometric cybersecurity scanners. This review aims to provide a summary of technological evolutions that led to the Internet of Things, and to discuss what the IoT is all about, while explaining its relevance in healthcare and pharmacy practice in particular.
