eVTOL mass variation with powertrain configurations and energy mix: to
gear or not to gear
Abstract
This article provides key insights in motorization design choice for
electric vehicles. As an emerging technology, EVs come with direct drive
or geared configurations. As an even younger technology in the aerospace
field, propulsive electric motorization is a key enabler to a closer to
zero carbon economy. This technical article provides break-even points
and knowledge on why and when using a high speed strategy and compares 2
very different energy mixes: Hybrid-electric and All-electric. The
presented technique allows to save powertrain mass, and help
proliferation of these technologies.
